Rio Grande Valley Lodging Suggestions (listed west to east):
Rio Grande City: Rancho Lomitas. Beautiful casitas in a nature environment, though not super convenient to other birding locations as it is about 20 minutes north of Rio Grande City.
*McAllen: Peculiar Nest B&B. Upscale lodging in a beautiful, serene setting on a small lake. Cabin, suite, and standard rooms available.
Pharr: Birdhouse on the Rio. Large home with multiple bedrooms, a 3/4 mile drive from the Rio Grande.
*Alamo: Alamo Inn B&B. Budget-friendly rooms with various layout options.
Harlingen: Green Jay Haven. Cozy home with a fenced backyard. (Unavailable January - April).
South Padre Island: South Padre Island Condo. Owned by a birder.
* Most centrally located, if you're wanting to base your entire trip out of one location. All locations are approximately 1.5 hours max, west and east.
Rio Grande Valley Tent Camping Suggestions (listed west to east):
Tent camping in the RGV is unfortunately very extremely limited. Here are the only options that I am aware of.
Starr County
Falcon State Park (Tent & RV)
*Nearby Falcon County Park has free tent and RV camping, but dilapidated facilities, and I would not personally recommend it.
Hidalgo County
Bentsen State Park (Tent - walk-in only, 1/2 mile from parking lot)
Americana RV Resort (RV + a few tent sites available)
Oleander Acres (Tent & RV sites)
Cameron County
Adolph Thomae Jr. County Park (Tent & RV)
Bird & Nature Related Lodging Suggestions Located Elsewhere:
These are places that I have stayed at personally, that I recommend to others due to their unique experience.
Albuquerque, New Mexico: Monterey Motel: Not nature focused, but convenient, new, clean, and a VIBE! http://www.themontereymotel.com/
West Texas: La Centinela at Rio Bravo Ranch. Upscale lodging on a bluff overlook the Rio Grande / US & Mexico in Presidio, TX.
